12-12:30 pm – Student Led Tour: Join a Henry Student Exhibition Guide for a 30-minute tour. All tours meet in the museum lobby.

12:30-1:00 pm – Mindfulness Meditation: Mindful Awareness is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical, mental, and emotional experiences. Join us to recenter and relax during your busy workday.

7:00 pm – Paris is Burning Screening. This is a documentary film directed by Jennie Livingston that explores issues of race, class, and gender in the context of the New York City drag balls of the 1980s. This intimate and controversial film immerses the viewer in a subculture where contestants compete in categories that often skew and mimic hetero normative notions of race and gender. This film explores the notion of idealized beauty and the gendered image also explored in Out [o] Fashion Photography: Embracing Beauty.

12-12:30 – Faculty Focus Tour: Carrie Bodle is a visual and sound artist who creates immersive installations that explore the relationships between art and science, translating inaudible or invisible phenomena into sensible experiences. Carrie will guide visitors through Now Here is also Nowhere: Part II.
Thursday, April 18th
7-8 pm - Bodycast, an Artist Talk by Suzanne Bocanegra Starring Frances McDormand. This event is sold out.
Sunday, April 21st
2-3 pm – Join Deputy Director of Art and Education Luis Croquer for a Curator Led Tour of Now Here is also Nowhere: Part II. This exhibition closes May 5th, so we encourage you to come see it soon!

Come to the Henry tomorrow for this month’s Focus Tour! The 30 minute tour will be led by UW School of Art faculty and artist Claire Cowie who will guide visitors through Like a Valentine: The Art of Jeffry Mitchell. The tour starts at 12 and will leave you with enough time to grab a sammy at Molly’s all within your lunch hour!
From painting to sculpture to photogravure, the work produced by Seattle-based artist Claire Cowie conjures up a bizarre menagerie, replete with composite creatures and exotic locales. Haunting disembodied figures populate her landscapes; they appear at once otherworldly and familiar as they beckon the eye and the imagination. Her collages, watercolors, and prints recall Chinese and Japanese landscape painting traditions. Using a minimum of strokes she achieves deep spaces, producing dreamlike landscapes that recede into the distance. Claire received her BFA in Drawing and Printmaking from Washington University in St. Louis in 1997, and her MFA in Printmaking from the University of Washington in 1999. She is locally represented by James Harris Gallery.

It’s another seven days at the Henry: and that means it’s time for another SHARK WEEK, the weekly feature that’s exactly like the other shark week except without sharks and instead we give you posters. Posters, that is, that go in the Henry’s Fin, which you can see in the first installment. David Herbert’s Open Studio ended last Sunday (but his exhibit is still going strong!) and Sandra Kroupa’s Book Arts talk on Sunday kicked off the monthly Performance Exhibitions series for Shelf Life. So that means THE FIN NEEDS FRESH POSTERS and this week, it’s a trilogy!

This Saturday in addition to the Arnold Palmer of Book Sales/Book Swaps there will be a guided tour starting at 2 pm featuring I Myself Have Seen It: Photography & Kiki Smith and Vortexhibition Polyphonica Opus III.
The tour will last 50 minutes and will be led by a trained guide. It’s another opportunity to see the Kiki Smith show in its last month (!!!) at the Henry as well as get an introduction to the latest iteration of the collections show, Vortexhibition Polyphonica Opus III.
