SEE LISTEN TASTE FEEL Preview | Jeppe Hein’s Karriere

BUY TICKETS NOW!

SEE LISTEN TASTE FEEL isn’t the only place where Danish-born Berlin-based artist Jeppe Hein has thrown a party. He is the mastermind behind Copenhagen’s KARRIERE BAR - part bar/restaurant, part gallery, part music lounge, part treehouse hideout – a contemporary space for “exclusive” and “informal” social interaction built and designed by world class artists Jeppe Hein, Olafur Eliasson, Ernesto Neto, Carsten Holler, among many others. With Karriere, Jeppe’s got some cred–the man knows what he’s doing. I won’t be in Copenhagen anytime soon, but SEE LISTEN TASTE FEEL will be here Saturday! More after the jump!

Since moving to Seattle about eight years ago, I can safely say that THE BEST PLACE TO DANCE in Seattle – hands (and feet) down – is at Emerald City Soul Club – where they invite you to GET DOWN TO THE GET DOWN! I love seeing a dance floor packed with a diverse crowd, mandatory and spontaneous clapping, and an indescribable dose of magic. I have never seen such joy (not to mention sweat) in my life. And Emerald City Soul Club will be serving up some rare soul at SEE LISTEN TASTE FEEL – further cementing this event as THE PARTY OF THE YEAR!

“Outside the club, the crowd was unanimous. “It’s the best night in Seattle,” said 27-year-old Matt Bowen. “It’s the place people will let the pretense down. People want real music. They hear this soul stuff and they wanna dance.”

When the party starts at 9:30PM, Chef Sundstrom’s dessert and delights will offer all guests a sweet tasting, with dancing into the early morning. Here is a brief profile of Johnathan Sundstrom that will be sure to tempt your tastebuds:

Johnathan Sundstrom began formal training at New England Culinary Institute, in Montpelier, Vermont, in 1987 and went on to complete the two-year program with honors and an associates degree. Prior to NECI, John apprenticed for 4 years to chef Yasuyuki Shigarami, classically trained in Japanese cuisine and sushi. After graduating from culinary school, John spent the next few years working in some of the country’s finest resort hotels, including; the 5-star Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, Club XIX at the Lodge at Pebble Beach and Stein Ericksen Lodge.

He moved to Seattle in 1991, worked at raison d’etre, Campagne, and Café Sport, learning about local ingredients and meeting northwest farmers and foragers. He cooked at Dahlia Lounge, was promoted to sous chef within a year, and named chef a year later, working closely with owner Tom Douglas developing the restaurant to one of national prominence.

In March of 1999, John toured Japan, exploring, tasting and researching Japanese food and culture. In October and November of that year, he also went on a working tour of New York and San Francisco’s finest kitchens, a sort of “Culinary Graduate School” with renowned chefs Daniel Boulud, Jean-George Vongerichten, Diane Forley, Gary Danko, and Traci Des Jardins. Following these inspiring and educational travels, John returned to Seattle with a renewed sense of purpose, new ideas and techniques, and a greater understanding of excellence.

Jeppe Hein’s work has recently been featured at Western Bridge, and the artist is currently developing a new project for Seattle’s 4Culture, creating an artwork on top of the Tashiro Kaplan Building that has the potential to become a downtown landmark. His “Mirror Labyrinth”, Commissioned by the Contemporary Art Gallery will be unveiled this winter in Vancouver, B.C.

Hein studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts in Copenhagen and the Stadel Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste in Frankfurt. His recent exhibitions include ICA Boston (2008);Sculpture Center, New York (2007); Tate Modern, London (2007); The Curve, Barbican Art Centre, London (2007); Hayward Gallery, London (2006-2008); Liverpool Biennale (2006); Centre Georges Pompidou Paris (2005); MOCA, Los Angeles (2005); P.S.1. MOMA, New York (2004); 50th Biennale di Venezia (2003).

From: Jeppe Hein, Until Now. London 2006 | By Francesco Bonami

“Every experiment is a situation in which the end is unknown;it is tentative, indeterminate, something that may fail. An experiment may produce only a restatement of the obvious or yield unexpected insight. The indeterminacy of its outcome is part of its excitement.” – Stanley Milgram, The individual in a social world

Who is Jeppe Hein? A contemporary artist or a sociopsychologist, like Stanley Milgram, lent to the art world? The worst definition would be to describe him as an “interactive artist.” First because interactive art never works, and Jeppe Hein’s projects usually work quite well, second because interactive art, often, is not art. Still there is a lot of action, in Hein’s work, between the idea and the viewer. We could say that his work is about feelings, a sort of mental sculpture that has both a life of its own and a life shared with the viewer. It happens sometimes that the users of Hein’s work don’t even know what the work is about, actually they don’t even realize it’s a work of art. People use the work because the work is made to be used, but who uses it, usually, doesn’t see it.
