The Week Ahead @ Henry

It’s nearly graduation time which means…

UW School of Art + Art History + Design MFA + MDes Thesis Exhibition

Each year, the Henry presents the University of Washington’s School of Art + Art History + Design’s Master of Fine Arts and Master of Design thesis exhibition. Throughout their program, students consult with academic advisers and working artists to develop advanced techniques, expand concepts, and discuss critical issues. They emerge with a vision and direction for their own work, which is embodied in the pieces they have chosen to present.

The exhibition features the work of Maria Rose Adams, Matthew Schau Allen, Tim Coleman, Shaghayegh Ghassemian, Katherine Groesbeck, Scott Ichikawa, Morgan Mangiaruga, Coley Mixan, Ryan Moeck, Sarah Norsworthy, Krista Schoening, Abigail R. Steinem, Amanda C. Sweet, Zheng Wu, Lanxia (Summer) Xie, and Kun Xu.

Deep Storage – School of Art Style

The UW is a huge campus.
A lot of students make art here. It’s always a plus when we get to know these students  – and the two-way (Henry to students / Students to Henry) street is busy. Student exhibitions happen all the time, every now and then these students send out press releases and encourage non-students and non-faculty to come and check them out.

The communication lines seem more open than ever. It could be the founding of SHAG (the Student Henry Advisory Group), or ArtsUW, ArtsLink, or maybe we’re all just getting better at communicating, all the time. Maybe it’s just Facebook! Whatever the reason, I’m delighted. One of the great things about working at the Henry is that we are part of this HUGE research facility, and new ideas are all around us. Getting to witness the development of these ideas and meeting the emerging artists here is a great fringe benefit of being here.

Make It Work! UW School of Art: Commisssions Project at the Henry!

I love Project Runway, and if you do too, you already know the importance of the designer/client relationship. This notion goes beyond Madison Avenue this weekend at the Henry Art Gallery–as the University of Washington School of Art Fibers students present their work from the Commissions Project! You will be able to view their custom rugs in the Henry’s unique East Gallery (which you can also view from above on our Mezzanine Level) and admire the beautiful textiles of these young artists! The rugs are on view Saturday and Sunday only, so visit the museum this weekend (and don’t miss the current Henry Exhibitions Roman Holiday, The Violet Hour, Matthew Buckingham: Play the Story)

UW School of Art: Commissions Project
Saturday, August 23 – Sunday, August 24   11:00 AM – 5:00 PM
East Gallery

For this special student exhibition at the Henry, a collection of custom rugs designed by University of Washington School of Art students will be on view at the Henry for one weekend only. These works were created as part of an innovative course taught by School of Art Fibers Program Professor Layne Goldsmith. The course, Commissions: the Artist/Client Process, paired students with art patrons to create custom, artist-designed rugs, which were then hand-woven in Nepal for the client’s specific site. Goldsmith led these students through the process of working with clients from concept development through design approval.
